Romania Becomes a Key Player in the European Market: Record Wheat Harvest Collected This Year

According to agricultural experts, Romanian farmers may record the highest wheat production since 1997 during the upcoming harvest season, which begins on July 1, 2025. Romania is expected to remain among the leading European wheat exporters this year, according to analysts from consulting firm Argus Media, as reported by Bloomberg.
Based on their assessments, following crop condition evaluations earlier this month, Romania’s wheat harvest is expected to reach 12.2 million tons in the 2025–2026 season, starting July 1, 2025. In the current season, which is about to end, Romania’s wheat production was estimated at 10.2 million tons. Experts attribute the production increase to better yield per hectare and an expansion of cultivated land.
“The wheat harvest in Romania is expected to begin within the next four weeks, depending on the region, later than last year due to cooler weather slowing crop development,” states the Argus Media report. According to statistical data available from the European Commission, Romania’s wheat exports from the beginning of the current season through April surpassed those of France. Typically, French farmers provide the largest wheat export volumes from the EU.
France’s 2024 wheat crop suffered due to excessive rainfall. Romania has gained importance on the global wheat market, confirmed by the fact that U.S. exchange operator CME Group Inc is using price quotes from Romanian ports — as well as neighboring Bulgaria — for its new Black Sea wheat futures contract. Trading of the previous contract was suspended following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Forecasts suggest that the weather will become warmer and drier in the coming weeks — a typical scenario for Romania. However, analysts believe that the hot weather will not pose risks to the wheat crop in its final development phase.
