Trilateral Meeting on Port Infrastructure and Navigation Development Held in Galați

A trilateral meeting between representatives of Ukraine, Romania, and the European Commission took place in the Romanian city of Galați as part of the “Solidarity Lanes” initiative. The aim of the event was to strengthen cooperation in the Danube region and coordinate efforts to develop transport infrastructure, according to the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority (USPA).
On the Ukrainian side, the meeting was attended by USPA Chairman Oleksandr Semyrha and his deputy Vyacheslav Kharkavenko. Representing Romania were Angela Stella Ivan, Director General of the Lower Danube Administration, and officials from the Ministry of Transport. Representatives of the Danube Commission and the European Commission, led by Alan Baron, also joined the discussions.
The parties agreed to improve the PRIMUS information platform to enhance data exchange between Ukrainian and Romanian port authorities. Measures to improve navigation safety and expand the region’s logistical capabilities were also discussed.
The participants confirmed their intention to prepare a Memorandum of Understanding as a foundation for long-term partnership.
“Danube ports have become Ukraine’s key logistics gateways to Europe. That’s why it is crucial to develop and strengthen systematic, transparent, and technological cooperation with Romanian and European partners now,” emphasized Oleksandr Semyrha.
The meeting demonstrated a shared commitment to the integration of Ukraine’s and the EU’s transport networks — which is especially important in the context of war and Ukraine’s future accession to the European Union.
It is worth noting that in January–March 2025, Ukrainian ports handled 23 million tons of cargo. The largest volumes traditionally came from the ports of Greater Odesa, which accounted for 20.7 million tons. In April of this year, total transshipment reached 6 million tons, including 3.1 million tons of grain and 1 million tons of iron ore.
