Danube cluster ports are operating at half capacity, and grain transshipment has dropped sixfold

As of today, the ports of Izmail, Reni, and Ust-Dunaisk are operating at less than half of their capacity. In 2024, transshipment decreased by almost 46% — down to 17.3 million tons, reports Iryna Kosse, a senior research fellow at the Institute for Economic Research and Policy Consulting, according to https://elevatorist.com/.
At the same time, almost 80 million tons of cargo were shipped via the maritime corridor last year.
According to the expert, grain exports through Romania’s Constanța in January–February of this year dropped sixfold, and major traders — including Nibulon — do not see significant potential to increase grain export volumes through the Danube ports.
