JadeWeserPort Strengthens Cooperation with Austria and Opens New Prospects for Logistics

JadeWeserPort Strengthens Cooperation with Austria and Opens New Prospects for Logistics

Germany’s only deep-water port — JadeWeserPort in Wilhelmshaven — showcased its logistics capabilities at the port of Enns on the Danube. As part of an event organized jointly with TFG Transfracht, Nordfrost, Eurogate, and the Enns container terminal, Austrian shippers were introduced to the port’s potential for handling large vessels and developing multimodal routes.

Wilhelmshaven has long been connected to Enns and Salzburg by regular container trains. With berth depths of up to 18 meters, the port can accommodate ocean-going container ships with a capacity of over 23,000 TEU regardless of tides. Currently, its facilities are operating at only 70% capacity, despite regular calls by major shipping companies, including Maersk, MSC, CMA CGM, and Hapag-Lloyd.

Since the beginning of the year, the port has been handling vessels of the Gemini Cooperation alliance (Hapag-Lloyd and Maersk), which has significantly strengthened its position on the Asia–Europe and Europe–North America routes. The Eurogate terminal spans 130 hectares and is capable of handling up to 2.7 million TEU annually. It is equipped with 10 container cranes, an intermodal terminal, and operates 40 scheduled trains to European destinations.

In response to growing demand, Eurogate is investing in expansion and digitalization of operations. According to representatives from Hapag-Lloyd and Transfracht, JadeWeserPort has already become the second most important port in Northern Europe, and the growing cargo flows through Austrian terminals in Enns and Salzburg further solidify this corridor as a stable and promising logistics route.
