A new bridge over the Prut River will connect Moldova to the EU transport network

A new road bridge over the Prut River, linking Bumbăta (Romania) and Leova (Moldova), will become a strategic element in the integration of the Republic of Moldova into the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T).
The Romanian Government approved the memorandum on its construction on October 23, 2025, reports Logos Press.

The bridge will provide direct connectivity to Romania’s primary and secondary road networks and indirect access to the EU’s TEN-T corridors.
The technical and economic feasibility contract was signed on February 24, 2025, with work officially launched on March 19, 2025, and a completion deadline of March 2026.

The future intergovernmental agreement will define financing mechanisms, environmental protection standards, customs and tax rules, access provisions, and procedures for resolving technical and administrative disputes. A joint Romania–Moldova commission will coordinate all project stages.

The Bumbăta–Leova Bridge will expand the network of modern crossings over the Prut, strengthening economic mobility, trade links, and investment potential in the border region.

Institute of Danube Research:
“The bridge across the Prut has both practical and symbolic importance — it connects Moldova not only with Romania but also with the infrastructural backbone of the European Union. This is a significant step for the Prut–Danube region, enhancing mobility, integration, and cross-border cooperation.”
