CFR to Modernize Railway Infrastructure in the Danube Region

Romania’s national railway operator CFR has signed a contract with the Austrian group PORR Construct for the design and execution of works on the Băile Herculane – Poarta railway section.

The project is part of the modernization of the strategic Craiova – Drobeta Turnu-Severin – Caransebeș line, which crosses the South-Western Danube region and plays a vital role in strengthening cross-border connectivity along the Danube basin.

The total value of the contract is 2.14 billion lei (approximately €400 million, VAT excluded). Funding comes from the EU Transport Programme 2021–2027, the budget of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure of Romania, and other sources.

The contract duration is 60 months: 12 months for design and 48 months for construction. This investment will enhance the integration of the Danube region’s transport systems into the wider European network and boost the competitiveness of the Danube–Carpathian corridor.
