Chisinau Airport launches direct flight to Geneva

Chisinau International Airport has expanded its network of European destinations: FLYONE has officially launched a direct flight between Chisinau and Geneva. The new route connects Moldova’s capital with Switzerland’s second-largest city and one of Europe’s key business and diplomatic centres.

According to the airport’s press service, flights will operate twice a week — every Thursday and Sunday. The new connection will allow passengers to travel to Switzerland without transfers, which is important for business trips, tourism, private travel and links with the Moldovan diaspora.

Geneva has a special role in the European and international communication system. The city is an important centre for international organisations, financial institutions, humanitarian diplomacy, scientific cooperation and business activity. Therefore, direct air service with Chisinau may strengthen the mobility of citizens, businesses and representatives of international institutions.

For Moldova, the launch of the new route is another indication of the gradual expansion of transport integration with the European space. Against the background of changes in regional logistics and passenger flows caused by Russia’s war against Ukraine, Chisinau Airport is increasingly acting as an important aviation hub in South-Eastern Europe.

The opening of the Chisinau — Geneva direct flight has not only transport, but also broader regional significance. For Moldova, it is an element of deeper physical connectivity with the European Union and Western European countries, which is particularly important in the context of European integration, growing international cooperation and the need to strengthen economic mobility.

For the Ukrainian Danube region and Odesa Oblast, the development of Chisinau’s air network also has practical importance. While Ukrainian civilian airports remain restricted, Chisinau continues to be one of the nearest international aviation hubs for residents of southern Ukraine. The expansion of its route network effectively improves the region’s transport accessibility and creates additional opportunities for business, humanitarian, educational and private travel.

This route also reflects a broader trend: Moldova’s transport infrastructure is gradually integrating into the wider European mobility space, while cross-border links between Ukraine, Moldova and EU countries are becoming increasingly important for regional development.
