Construction Begins on Solar Power Plant with Battery Storage in Romania

Romanian renewable energy company Waldevar Energy has begun constructing a photovoltaic power plant with an installed capacity of 95 MWp, combined with a 220 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS).

The project is being developed in the commune of Dobrești, Dolj County, southern Romania, for the Chinese construction and energy equipment manufacturer SANY Group.

According to the company’s estimates, the solar power plant will generate approximately 135 GWh of clean electricity annually—enough to meet the consumption needs of around 50,000 households. The project is also expected to prevent approximately 40,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year.

The Dobrești energy complex will combine solar generation, utility-scale battery storage and dedicated high-voltage infrastructure. The project includes the construction of a 110/20 kV transformer substation and a 110 kV underground power transmission line.

Combining the solar power plant with an energy storage facility will make it possible to store surplus electricity, regulate its delivery to the grid and partially offset the variability inherent in renewable energy generation.

The project’s financial details have not been disclosed.

The Dobrești project demonstrates Romania’s transition from merely expanding renewable energy capacity towards building a more flexible and balanced energy system. Combining solar generation with battery storage makes it possible to regulate electricity supply to the grid and partially compensate for the variability inherent in renewable energy sources.

Projects of this kind strengthen Romania’s energy resilience and create the conditions for further integration of renewable energy into the regional market. This experience is particularly relevant to Ukraine in the context of post-war energy infrastructure reconstruction and the development of distributed generation and energy storage systems.
