Danube Wine Festival to take place in Kozloduy on June 27

The Danube Wine Festival will take place on June 27 in the Bulgarian town of Kozloduy. The event is organized by the Danube Winemakers Association and will be held ahead of International Danube Day, marked annually on June 29.

The festival was announced by Antoneta Genova from Ahinora Winery, a member of the Association’s board.

This will be the first time Kozloduy hosts the Danube Wine Festival. More than ten wineries from north-western and north-central Bulgaria are expected to participate. The event will provide an opportunity for wine producers to present their products to restaurant owners from across the country and to meet wine enthusiasts directly.

The partners of the festival include the Municipality of Kozloduy and Wine Lovers, a platform focused on the distribution and promotion of Bulgarian wines through specialized events.

Founded in March 2024, the Danube Winemakers Association brings together 20 wineries from Bulgaria’s Danube region. Its objective is to promote regional tourism and present the Danube region as a destination for high-quality events, wine tourism and authentic local experiences.

Comment by the Institute of Danube Research

The Institute of Danube Research notes that such initiatives are important not only for the development of local winemaking, but also for shaping a modern image of the Danube region as a space of economic, cultural and tourism cooperation.

“The Danube is increasingly perceived not only as a transport or natural artery of Europe, but also as a shared cultural and economic space. Wine festivals, gastronomic routes and local tourism events create a new quality of regional identity. For the Ukrainian Danube region, this experience is also important, as the combination of tourism, local production, culture and cross-border cooperation may become one of the directions of post-war recovery and development in southern Odesa region,” the Institute of Danube Research states.

The Institute emphasizes that wine and gastronomic tourism in the Danube basin has significant potential to create new economic links between communities, producers, the HoReCa sector and tourism operators.

It is also important that the festival is being held ahead of International Danube Day. This makes it possible to combine the environmental, cultural and economic dimensions of the Danube agenda and shows that regional development can rely not only on major infrastructure projects, but also on local initiatives that generate added value for communities.
