JT Grup Oil Commissions Petroleum Products Terminal at the Port of Constanța

Romanian company JT Grup Oil has announced the commissioning of a new petroleum products storage and handling terminal at the Port of Constanța. The investment in the project amounted to approximately RON 150 million (around EUR 28 million).

The terminal, developed by its subsidiary JT Terminal Constanța, comprises eight storage tanks with a total capacity of 31,500 tonnes. Its designed annual throughput capacity reaches 1 million tonnes of petroleum products.

The facility features multimodal infrastructure capable of handling barges with capacities ranging from 3,000 to 9,000 tonnes, simultaneously processing 16 railway tank cars, and accommodating up to 100 road tankers per day.

The company also plans to develop a bitumen terminal and a new logistics facility in the Dubova–Orșova area on the Danube, with a projected handling capacity of up to 20,000 tonnes per month.

Commentary by the Institute of Danube Research

According to experts at the Institute of Danube Research, the commissioning of the new terminal strengthens the Port of Constanța's position as one of the key energy and logistics hubs in the Black Sea region.

Of particular importance is the integration of maritime, inland waterway, and land transport routes. The expansion of terminal infrastructure in Constanța, combined with planned investments along the Danube, creates additional opportunities for petroleum product supplies to Central and Southeastern European countries.

For Ukraine, such projects are of strategic importance, as they contribute to the diversification of potential fuel import routes, strengthen energy resilience, and promote transport cooperation with Romania.

At the same time, the expansion of Romania's port infrastructure highlights the need to modernize Ukraine's Danube ports of Reni, Izmail, and Ust-Dunaisk, enhance their competitiveness, and integrate them into European logistics networks.

The Institute of Danube Research emphasizes that the development of transport and energy infrastructure across the Danube and Black Sea region should become a priority for cross-border cooperation between Ukraine, Romania, and other countries in the region.
