Moldova and Kazakhstan are preparing a meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation, which is expected to outline new priorities for bilateral cooperation.
The issue was discussed in New York during a meeting between Moldova’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popșoi and Kazakhstan’s Foreign Minister Mukhtar Tileuberdi.
One of the key topics was the expansion of bilateral trade and the attraction of Kazakh investment to Moldova. The two sides also discussed potential joint projects in the energy sector, particularly in renewable energy and energy efficiency.
According to Mihai Popșoi, the opening of the Embassy of the Republic of Moldova in Astana in 2025 has become an important step in strengthening bilateral relations. A permanent diplomatic presence is expected to facilitate closer contacts between public institutions, businesses and the societies of both countries.
The ministers also noted the positive cooperation between Moldova and Kazakhstan within international organisations, including the United Nations.
Comment by Institute of Danube Research
The Institute of Danube Research notes that the intensification of Moldova–Kazakhstan dialogue has a broader economic dimension than simply increasing bilateral trade.
“For Moldova, cooperation with Kazakhstan may become an additional instrument for diversifying its external economic relations and attracting capital from Central Asia. The energy sector appears particularly promising. If the work of the intergovernmental commission moves from political dialogue to concrete investment projects, cooperation in renewable energy, energy efficiency and related infrastructure could acquire significant practical substance.
The transport and logistics dimension is also important. Expanding economic ties between Central Asia and Eastern Europe increases the importance of routes connecting the Caspian region with the Black Sea, Romania and, further, the European Union market. In this context, Moldova can view its geographical position not only as a limitation but also as an opportunity to integrate into broader regional trade and logistics chains,” the Institute of Danube Research notes.
The forthcoming meeting of the Moldovan-Kazakh intergovernmental commission is expected to specify priority sectors for cooperation and identify potential joint projects.
