New EU Border Control System

The National Road Transport Agency (ANTA) has announced that starting October 12, the European Union will introduce the new Entry/Exit System (EES) at the external borders of the Schengen Area.

According to the European Commission, the system will be gradually rolled out over six months across all EU and Schengen-associated countries.

Upon first entry after the launch, the following will be registered:

  • the traveler’s name;
  • type of travel document;
  • biometric data (fingerprints and facial image);
  • date and place of entry and exit.

The EES will help detect overstays, document fraud, and identity misuse, gradually replacing the current passport stamping procedure.

For travelers from Moldova and other third countries entering the EU through Romania, this means a shift toward a fully digital control system. The European Commission stresses that the rollout will fully respect fundamental rights and data protection standards
