ÖBB Rail Cargo Group Launches New Rail Routes to Romania

The Austrian logistics company Rail Cargo Group (RCG), part of ÖBB, has announced the expansion of its TransNET logistics network with two new intermodal routes to Romania.

According to the company, the existing route between Genk and Curtici has been adapted to changing customer demand and will now operate as a Liège–Curtici connection. The new service will run seven round trips per week from Liège.

In addition, RCG is launching a new route from Duisburg to Curtici, offering three round trips per week. These services further strengthen rail-based intermodal connectivity between Western and South-Eastern Europe.

Curtici functions as a central freight hub within RCG’s intermodal network, linking Western Europe with Turkey through the new connections from Belgium and Germany, as well as the existing Curtici–Istanbul route. This configuration enhances transit efficiency and supports resilient supply chains across key European corridors.

IDR Comment.

The expansion of Rail Cargo Group’s services to Romania highlights the growing strategic role of intermodal rail logistics in the Danube macro-region. Strengthening Curtici as a multimodal hub increases Romania’s transit capacity and reinforces land-based connections between Western Europe, South-Eastern Europe and Turkey, contributing to diversification and greater resilience of regional supply chains.
