Serbia and Bulgaria Connected by a New Highway

Bulgaria has officially opened the final section of the “Europe” motorway, linking the Kalotina border checkpoint with Serbia and the capital, Sofia.

The opening ceremony was attended by Bulgarian Prime Minister Rossen Zhelyazkov, Minister of Regional Development and Public Works Ivan Ivanov, and GERB party leader Boyko Borissov.

The total length of the new modern motorway is 63 km. It forms an important part of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) and plays a strategic role in enhancing regional connectivity and trade.

Serbia had already inaugurated its section of the motorway, from Niš to Kalotina, back in 2019. As a result, the full route between Sofia and Niš is now operational as a modern express highway, improving logistics, tourism, and transit opportunities between the two countries
