Two Romanian boats twice illegally crossed into Ukrainian territory on the Danube within one day, the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine reported on Tuesday, October 14, citing UNN.
Border guards detained the Romanian citizens who had gone fishing without maps or navigation devices and accidentally entered Ukraine’s internal waters.
Administrative protocols were drawn up against the four individuals, who were subsequently handed over to the Romanian side.
Comment by the Institute of Danube Research:
According to IDR experts, this incident underlines the ongoing need for enhanced coordination between Ukrainian and Romanian border and river authorities.
Navigation along the Danube’s border sections remains complex and requires clear marking and joint monitoring.
Regular joint patrols, real-time vessel tracking, and upgraded navigation systems are crucial for preventing similar situations in the future.
