Two-way traffic on the Danube Bridge near Ruse restored after almost two years of repairs

Two-way traffic for all types of vehicles has been restored on the Danube Bridge near Ruse. This was reported by Bulgaria’s Road Infrastructure Agency.

The final road works have been completed on the last closed 320-metre section in the direction of Romania. The full restoration of traffic is important for road connectivity between Bulgaria and Romania, as well as for tourist flows at the beginning of the summer season, particularly for Romanian tourists travelling to resorts on Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast.

At the same time, repair works on the bridge are still ongoing. They are currently being carried out on the lower structure of the facility, including the bridge supports and metal elements, but these works do not affect traffic. The estimated deadline for completing all construction and installation works under the major overhaul is September 2026.

The major repair of the Bulgarian section of the Danube Bridge began on July 10, 2024. The works were carried out in six stages, with vehicles gradually passing in both directions in the lane where no works were being conducted at the relevant stage.

The Bulgarian section of the bridge is part of road I-2. The Danube Bridge between Ruse and Giurgiu was commissioned in 1954, and no full-scale major overhaul had been carried out since then.

The restoration of two-way traffic on the Ruse–Giurgiu Bridge is an important development for the entire Lower Danube region. This crossing remains one of the key elements of transport connectivity between Bulgaria and Romania and plays a significant role in ensuring cross-border mobility, freight transport, tourist flows and regional trade.

For the Danube region, such infrastructure facilities have significance that goes beyond bilateral relations. Bridges across the Danube form the basis of spatial connectivity between European Union countries, the Balkans and the Black Sea region. Therefore, their technical condition, capacity and operating regime directly affect the efficiency of transport corridors, business logistics and the everyday mobility of citizens.

The Institute of Danube Research notes that the experience of repairing the Ruse–Giurgiu Bridge confirms a systemic problem of Danube infrastructure: a considerable part of key crossings was built decades ago and requires comprehensive modernization. Amid growing transport pressure, expanding trade and the increasing role of the Danube as a strategic corridor, the modernization of bridges, ports, access roads and border infrastructure should be treated as part of a long-term policy of regional resilience.

This is also of particular importance for Ukraine. Since the beginning of the full-scale war, the Danube route has effectively become one of the key alternative corridors for foreign trade, logistics and humanitarian mobility. Therefore, infrastructure development on the Lower Danube — including between Romania and Bulgaria — affects not only these two countries, but also the wider space of transport security, including the Ukrainian Danube region.

In the view of the Institute of Danube Research, the restoration of traffic on the Ruse–Giurgiu Bridge should be seen not merely as a local road event, but as part of a broader process of modernizing the Danube transport system. The further development of the region requires the synchronization of repair works, the digitalization of border procedures, increased crossing capacity and the implementation of new bridge projects across the Danube.
