Ukraine modernizes border crossing points with Moldova in Odesa region

Ukraine has completed the modernization of several border crossing points on the Ukrainian-Moldovan border in Odesa region. These include Starokozache — Tudora, Dolynske — Cișmichioi, Lisne — Săiți and Maloyaroslavets 1 — Ceadîr-Lunga.

This was reported by Oleksii Kuleba, Deputy Prime Minister for Restoration of Ukraine and Minister for Communities and Territories Development.

According to him, infrastructure at the facilities has been upgraded, new modular structures and backup power sources have been installed. Modern lighting and engineering systems have also been created, pedestrian areas have been arranged, and working conditions for border guard and customs services have been improved.

In addition, construction of a modern service area near the Reni — Giurgiulești border crossing point along the Odesa — Reni highway has been completed. The site is designed to accommodate 46 trucks and 13 passenger cars.

The service area provides comfortable conditions for drivers’ rest, as well as lighting, water supply, sewage systems and barrier-free infrastructure.

Oleksii Kuleba thanked Ukraine’s international partners and the European Union for supporting the implementation of these projects under the Solidarity Lanes initiative.

Comment by the Institute of Danube Research

The Institute of Danube Research notes that the development of border infrastructure on the Ukrainian-Moldovan route is part of a broader process of integrating southern Odesa region into European transport and logistics corridors.

“For the Ukrainian Danube region, the quality of border infrastructure is of strategic importance. This is not only about more comfortable border crossing, but also about the region’s ability to ensure stable trade, humanitarian and transport links with Moldova, Romania and the European Union. The modernization of crossing points is a practical step toward increasing capacity, security and predictability of logistics,” the Institute of Danube Research states.

The Institute emphasizes that the modernization of such facilities is particularly important in the context of the operation of Ukrainian Danube ports and the Odesa — Reni route. Border crossings, service areas, access roads and customs infrastructure determine the real efficiency of the transport corridor.

According to the Institute, further development of this route should include not only physical modernization of crossing points, but also digitalization of procedures, coordination between Ukrainian and Moldovan services, development of service infrastructure and integration of border routes into the European transport network.

For Odesa region, this has a dual significance: on the one hand, modernization strengthens the region’s transport resilience during the war; on the other hand, it creates a foundation for the long-term economic development of the Ukrainian Danube region.
