Ukraine and Moldova have reached an agreement to open a new international road border crossing point on their shared frontier. The crossing will operate 24/7 and will serve both passenger and freight traffic. It will be located in Vinnytsia Oblast at the Yampil bridge over the Dniester River.
The initiative is designed to improve logistics, accelerate border procedures, and increase the capacity of the Ukrainian-Moldovan border segment. Preparatory infrastructure works are already underway. On the Ukrainian side, coordination is carried out by the State Agency for Restoration and Infrastructure Development of Ukraine.
From a regional development perspective, the new crossing will diversify transport routes, reduce pressure on existing checkpoints, and strengthen economic cooperation between the two countries. In the broader strategic dimension, it enhances connectivity within the Danube–Black Sea macro-region and supports alignment with European border management standards.
Comment from the Institute of Danube Research
The Institute of Danube Research emphasizes that the project should be viewed not only as an infrastructure improvement but also as a strategic step toward strengthening cross-border resilience.
“Expanding border capacity between Ukraine and Moldova contributes to transport security, economic interdependence, and regional stability. The Yampil crossing will help reduce logistical costs, improve predictability of trade flows, and support the formation of cross-border economic clusters,” the Institute noted.
