The Delta-Pilot branch of the State Enterprise “Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority” has begun maintenance dredging works in the waters of the Izmail seaport.
The Institute of Danube Research reports this with reference to USPA.
The works are being carried out in the operational area of the berths, in sections where it is necessary to restore the design depths. This should ensure safe vessel calls, stable cargo operations, and the possibility of using the maximum permissible drafts of vessels and ship consignments more effectively.
The Port of Izmail remains one of the key elements of the Ukrainian Danube cluster. Maintaining proper depths near the berths is a critically important condition for navigation safety, efficient cargo handling and the uninterrupted operation of port infrastructure.
The fleet of the Delta-Pilot branch has been involved in the works, including the tugboat Aidar, the hopper barge KSH-2 and the survey boat Ivan Koval. A grab floating crane, engaged under a time-charter arrangement, is also being used.
Throughout the dredging period, specialists will monitor depths and the condition of the port waters. The works are expected to be completed within two months.
Comment by the Institute of Danube Research
Experts of the Institute of Danube Research note that maintenance dredging in the Port of Izmail has not only technical but also strategic significance for the stability of Ukrainian Danube logistics.
“After 2022, Izmail became one of the key port hubs through which Ukraine ensures alternative export and import routes. Under these conditions, maintaining design depths is a basic prerequisite for the efficient operation of berth infrastructure, reducing vessel downtime and preserving the competitiveness of the Ukrainian Danube cluster,” the IDR emphasised.
The Institute stresses that dredging is an important element of the port’s operational reliability, as it directly affects vessel calls, cargo batch volumes, cargo handling speed and the overall economics of transportation.
Such works are also important in the context of competition between the ports of the Lower Danube. The development of infrastructure in Giurgiulești, Constanța, Galați, Brăila and other regional logistics centres increases the requirements for Ukrainian ports in terms of service quality, depths, digitalisation of procedures and transport accessibility.
“Ukrainian Danube ports should be regarded not as a temporary alternative to Black Sea ports, but as a permanent strategic asset of the state. This requires systematic investment in dredging, railway and road access routes, transshipment capacities, energy resilience and coordination with European partners,” the Institute of Danube Research noted.
The IDR emphasises that maintaining depths in the waters of the Izmail port is one of the practical steps toward strengthening Ukraine’s role in the Danube transport corridor and increasing the resilience of the national logistics system under wartime conditions.
