ICGB, the operator of the Greece–Bulgaria gas interconnector (IGB), announced the signing of an agreement with the gas transmission system operators (TSOs) of Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova, and Ukraine to establish two new natural gas routes from Greece to Ukraine.
The new Route 2 and Route 3 will enable the transport of gas from the Alexandroupolis LNG terminal and the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) via IGB and then through the Trans-Balkan pipeline, crossing Romania and Moldova before reaching Ukraine.
This initiative supports the EU strategy to replace Russian gas with LNG and Caspian supplies, strengthening the region’s energy resilience. ICGB has also introduced a 46% tariff discount to make the routes more attractive.
The operators proposed to regulators that the two routes operate between December 2025 and April 2026 as a test period.
“Today’s signing demonstrates our joint determination to act in solidarity and ensure a safe and affordable energy flow across borders,” said ICGB Executive Directors Theodora Georgieva and George Satlas.
Comment by the Institute of Danube Research :
The establishment of two new gas corridors between Greece and Ukraine marks a strategic milestone in the energy integration of South-Eastern Europe.
This cooperation strengthens regional energy security, promotes diversification of supply sources, and links the Southern Gas Corridor with the Danube and Black Sea energy systems.
The IDR emphasizes that such interconnectivity enhances the resilience of the entire Danube macro-region, opening the path for cleaner energy and deeper EU–Ukraine integration.
