Modernisation of the Fishing Port in Tsarevo, Bulgaria
The municipality of Tsarevo has officially launched the modernisation of its fishing port on the Black Sea coast. The project, with a total value of EUR 1.65 million, is financed by the European Union and is scheduled for completion by August 2027.
According to the municipal press release, the project includes the construction of a boat repair workshop and a fishing gear storage facility, the elevation of quay walls, reconstruction of a pedestrian bridge, and the installation of four slipways for launching boats. A photovoltaic system will also be installed on the roof, reflecting the growing emphasis on energy efficiency and low-carbon port infrastructure.
The upgraded fishing port will be equipped with a modular light-fuel bunkering station, two flake-ice generators, three cold storage units, a telescopic front loader for launching and lifting boats, and a new anchor chain. The project is funded under the EU programme European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund.
Comment by the Institute of Danube Research
The modernisation of the Tsarevo fishing port illustrates how EU investments in Black Sea coastal infrastructure contribute to broader regional resilience and sustainability. From a Danube perspective, such projects are important not only for fisheries, but also for strengthening functional links between the Danube and Black Sea regions. Enhanced cooperation between Bulgarian, Romanian, Moldovan, and Ukrainian ports creates new opportunities for joint initiatives in sustainable fisheries, small-port development, green energy solutions, and integrated water-basin management across the wider Danube–Black Sea macro-region.
