Prime Minister of Moldova Alexandru Munteanu and President of Romania Nicușor Dan announced in Bucharest their intention to accelerate joint projects in infrastructure, energy, and Moldova’s EU integration, Logos Press reports.
By 2027, the countries plan to modernize the Sculeni–Sculeni, Cahul–Oancea, and Leușeni–Albița border bridges. Works continue on the Ungheni–Ungheni bridge, while preparations have accelerated for four additional new bridges: Costești–Stânca, Leova–Bumbeța, Lecca–Fălciu, Bărboieni–Rediu. Progress was also highlighted in strategic energy interconnections, including the 400 kV Vulcănești–Chișinău line to be completed this year, and future links Bălți–Suceava and Strășeni–Gutinaș.
Comment by the Institute of Danube Research:
The Institute of Danube Research notes that these initiatives are strategically important for strengthening transport and energy connectivity across the Lower Danube region.
1) The new and modernized Prut River bridges will contribute to a future Moldova–Romania–Ukraine mobility and logistics corridor, improving regional accessibility and supporting reconfigured export routes from Ukraine.
2) Energy interconnectors will increase Moldova’s system resilience and support its integration into the European energy market, strengthening the overall security architecture of the region.
3) The integration of infrastructure on both banks of the Prut creates the basis for a more cohesive economic space — from Bălți and Chișinău to Galați, Iași, and onward to the Odesa corridor.
For Ukraine, enhanced Moldova–Romania connectivity opens additional opportunities for tri-lateral cooperation in transport, energy transition, and border logistics.
IDR emphasizes that coordinated development within the Romania–Moldova–Ukraine triangle can become a central driver for the wider Danube–Black Sea macro-regional space.
