Chisinau International Airport is investing approximately MDL 180 million in the first phase of its modernization and expansion program, according to its director Sergiu Spoială. The project предусматривает the construction of around 5,000 square meters of additional space in departure and waiting areas, increasing terminal capacity by about 20%. Completion of the first phase is scheduled for early 2027.
The works will be financed entirely from the airport’s own funds. In parallel, next-generation security screening equipment will be installed to reduce passenger processing time.
Commentary by the Institute of Danube Research
According to the Institute of Danube Research, the modernization has direct strategic importance for passenger flows from the Odesa region of Ukraine. With Ukrainian airports largely non-operational, Chisinau has become a primary aviation gateway for residents of southern Ukraine.
Increased terminal capacity and upgraded security systems are expected to enhance passenger throughput, improve service quality, and reduce indirect logistical costs for travelers and businesses from Odesa Oblast. Due to geographic proximity and established ground transport links, Chisinau effectively functions as an alternative external air hub for the region, strengthening overall transport resilience in the Danube–Black Sea area.
