Commercial Fishing of Danube Shrimp Begins in Vylkove for the First Time

The first commercial fishing season for Danube shrimp has started in Vylkove, Odesa region. The new activity could provide additional opportunities for local entrepreneurship, although its economic and environmental prospects still require further study.

The species in question is the oriental river prawn, also known as the Japanese river prawn (Macrobrachium nipponense) — an invasive species that has spread in the Lower Danube and adapted to local natural conditions. It differs from the common Black Sea shrimp in its larger size and distinctive elongated limbs.

Until recently, Danube shrimp had mainly been caught by recreational fishers. In 2026, businesses with the necessary permits were granted the right to harvest the species commercially for the first time. Fishing gear used for this purpose is subject to official marking.

Special traps are used to catch the shrimp. They are placed near reed beds and checked the following day. This method requires fewer resources than traditional fishing and could therefore be accessible to small local enterprises.

The initial results do not yet provide sufficient grounds for definitive conclusions about profitability. Shrimp activity depends on water temperature: after the colder period, the species gradually emerges from a dormant state, while the most intensive fishing season is expected during the summer and early autumn.

Industry representatives note that demand for the product is already emerging. The main orders currently come from Odesa and Kyiv. Shrimp are generally sold after cooking and packaging, since the logistics required for transporting fresh products still need to be developed.

At the same time, the actual scale of the fishery, its economic efficiency and its impact on the ecosystem can only be assessed objectively after the first full commercial season.

IDR Comment

The launch of commercial Danube shrimp fishing is a notable example of how changes in aquatic ecosystems can create new economic opportunities for communities in the Ukrainian Danube region.

For Vylkove and the surrounding areas, this activity could become an additional component of the local economy — from harvesting and processing to gastronomic tourism and the development of a new regional brand.

However, economic interest should not outpace scientific assessment. The species is invasive, and its spread may affect the structure of local ecosystems. Commercial fishing should therefore be viewed not only as a source of income, but also as a potential instrument for regulated population management.

The first season should provide a basis for systematic monitoring. It is necessary to assess actual catch volumes, seasonal dynamics, the impact on other aquatic biological resources, processing capacity and the stability of demand.

For the Ukrainian Danube region, a promising model would combine entrepreneurial initiative, scientific support and environmental responsibility in the development of new economic activities.
