The state-owned enterprise Moldovan Railways has decided to reduce tariffs for the rail transport of grain and oilseed agricultural products within export–import operations. The adjusted tariffs, reduced by several percent per tonne, entered into force on 5 February 2026, according to Logos Press.
As emphasized by the head of the Grain Producers and Exporters Association Agrocereale, Yuri Rizha, the tariff reduction resulted from a constructive dialogue between representatives of the association, the management of Moldovan Railways, and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development of the Republic of Moldova.
The previous adjustment of rail tariffs for grain and oilseed transport took place in early November 2025, when rates were increased by an average of 7%. At that time, the Agrocereale Association noted that higher logistics costs negatively affected the competitiveness of agricultural producers, traders, and the national rail carrier itself. The recent tariff reduction is therefore viewed as a compromise solution acceptable to all key stakeholders.
Comment by the Institute of Danube Research
The reduction of rail tariffs for agricultural cargo in Moldova has systemic importance for logistics in the Lower Danube and Black Sea region. Under conditions of increased risks for maritime transport, railways play a stabilizing role in ensuring grain exports. The coordinated tariff decision enhances Moldova’s transit attractiveness, supports the retention of cargo flows within the Danube–Black Sea corridor, and creates preconditions for closer coordination with Ukrainian and Romanian logistics systems. In the medium term, such measures may contribute to strengthening the resilience of agricultural supply chains across the macro-region.
