The Institute of Danube Research emphasizes the strategic importance of the Giurgiulesti International Free Port, a key logistics hub for Moldova and the wider Lower Danube region.
The newly appointed German Ambassador to Moldova, Hubert Knirsch, visited the port facilities, where Matthias von Tucher, CEO of Danube Logistics, presented current projects and expressed appreciation for Germany’s ongoing support of Moldova’s EU integration process.
Giurgiulesti is Moldova’s only port with direct access to international maritime routes, managed by I.C.S. Danube Logistics, fully owned by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) since 2021. The port handles over 70% of Moldova’s inland waterway import and export, ensuring efficient supply chains and making a substantial contribution to the national economy.
Located on a deep-water section of the Danube (up to 7 meters), it can accommodate both river and sea vessels. Its strategic role continues to expand — the port is well-positioned to support Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction and the integration of EU and Danube transport networks.
IDR (comment):
“The Giurgiulesti Port is not only Moldova’s gateway to the sea but also a cornerstone of the European strategy for sustainable development in the Danube region.
Strengthening its infrastructure, attracting investment, and enhancing connections with the ports of Izmail, Reni, and Galati create new opportunities for cooperation within the EU–Ukraine–Moldova triangle.
Increasing the port’s logistical capacity supports supply chain resilience, the growth of the blue economy, and the recovery of the Danube region.”
