As part of cooperation under a Memorandum of Understanding between System Business Intelligence Technologies and the Research Institute of Biotechnology, Ecology, Molecular and Functional Medicine, technical specifications have been developed for creating a prototype and Ukraine’s first pilot project of a floating solar power station.
This was announced on Facebook by the institute’s director Yurii Starchevskyi, as reported by Pivden Sogodni news outlet.
“The next step is to identify a community that will become a partner in the consortium to prepare a grant application for the pilot project implementation. Considering the negative impacts of climate change, the Ukrainian Danube Region is viewed as the priority location for the first floating solar power plant,” — said the researcher.
According to the developers, floating solar stations not only generate clean energy but also reduce water evaporation from reservoirs, which is particularly relevant for Southern Odesa region, where lakes — such as Katlabuh — are suffering from drying due to prolonged heat waves.
Similar projects have already been implemented in the EU, North America, and Asia, demonstrating the environmental and economic benefits of this hybrid solution.
Comment by the Institute of Danube Research:
At the Institute of Danube Research, experts emphasize that the initiative represents a synergy between technological innovation and ecological management.
“The Ukrainian Danube region has significant potential for such solutions, especially amid increasing climate challenges. It is an example of a modern approach combining energy independence, climate adaptation, and water resource preservation. Such projects directly contribute to SDG 7 — Affordable and Clean Energy and SDG 13 — Climate Action,” — noted the IDR experts.
