The eco-tourism route Via Danubiana, stretching along Romania’s section of the Danube River, reached a new stage in early October with the installation of the first milestone in Teleorman County, at Islaz commune. This is the fourth marker on the trail, part of an effort to connect riverside communities through nature, history, and sustainable tourism.
The initiative, launched by the environmental NGO Mai Mult Verde, aims to create a continuous 1,000 km ecological route accessible to hikers, cyclists, and kayakers. Via Danubiana promotes biodiversity, supports local economies, and encourages a shift toward eco-friendly tourism models.
Doru Mitrana, President of Mai Mult Verde, said:
“Via Danubiana seeks to unite Danube communities and invite people to discover the ‘Romanian Riviera’ — a place where nature, tradition, and hospitality form a shared story.”
Founded in 2008, Mai Mult Verde has planted over 1.6 million trees, removed hundreds of tons of waste, and engaged thousands of volunteers in environmental projects across Romania.
Comment from the Institute of Danube Research:
“The Via Danubiana project is an inspiring example of how environmental initiatives can foster cross-border cooperation in the Danube Basin. Similar routes could be developed in Ukraine — in the Danube Delta, around the limans and protected Bessarabian areas — to combine biodiversity preservation with opportunities for local communities through sustainable tourism, small business, and environmental education,” noted IDR experts.
