As part of the preparations for participation in the international project “Vistula–Danube–Dnister: Cooperation of Local Authorities in the Field of Safety and Resilience of Rescue Services in Large River Regions,” the first online meeting with Polish partners was held today.
The meeting brought together Mayor Mykhailo Bukhtiiarov, the Deputy Mayor for Housing and Municipal Services Development, specialists from the socio-economic development department, representatives of the forestry sector, and experts from the State Emergency Service of Ukraine.
Discussions focused on the urgent need for specialized equipment and machinery to enhance rescue operations, preventive measures, and direct firefighting efforts in wetland areas. In the context of recurring droughts, the scale of fires in river floodplains has been increasing annually, resulting in biodiversity loss, destruction of habitats for birds and wildlife, and significant ecological damage.
Further consultations are planned to formalize partnerships, refine project proposals, and prepare funding applications. The expected outcome is the modernization of rescue services through the acquisition of essential technical equipment.
Comment of the Institute of Danube Research.
The “Vistula–Danube–Dnister” initiative reflects an emerging model of cross-basin cooperation in civil protection and climate adaptation. Strengthening the operational capacity of local rescue services in large river regions is a strategic priority for environmental resilience, ecosystem preservation, and sustainable territorial governance. Cooperation between Ukrainian and Polish municipalities creates a platform for systemic risk management in wetland and floodplain landscapes.
